I found this book very reassuring, in that myself, friends & colleagues are not the only ones that feel modern society is rapidly loosing all its intrinsic values.
The book ’spells out’ how society has degenerated over recent decades & moral values matter less & less! Superficiality rules!
This is an excellent, well written book & should be read by everyone, especially those who can influence society.

I read “Sense and Semblance” by Remington Norman with fear for our future and then with sparks of hope as it contains much food for thought. I have read it more than once and dipped back into the book when a thought took me back to a particular argument. As the monetary crisis hits us all in the next few years some of his comments will come back to haunt. Indeed, politicians Worldwide could do well to read the wisdom and ‘discussion’ between the pages.

“As this mindset becomes the norm – the way life is – its impact is lessened; rather like living with everyday violence in a sink housing-estate or a black African township you become inured to it. The fact is that, while many are busy chasing a chimerical, idealised, `lifestyle’, superficiality has corroded genuine quality of life. The argument of this book is that until these realities are recognised there is negligible chance of stopping, let alone reversing, the trend. This requires hard-edged, dispassionate thinking, free of obfuscation and sentimentality.”

I highly recommend this excellent book and it is definitely one to keep.

I chanced upon the book Sense & Semblance: An Anatomy of Superficiality in Modern Society on 31/05/08 in an Oxfam bookshop.
What can I say? It is simply an amazing book!! Remington ‘pulls no punches’ in expressing his views, most of which I agree with, on the causes and extent of the social decay and depravity in society.
Any one who truly cares about where society is going should read this book. Better still, this book should serve as a catalyst for a broad-based discussion on where exactly we’re going as a nation.

The book Sense & Semblance: An Anatomy of Superficiality in Modern Society is not just excellent, it is a master piece!! Remington Norman ‘pulls no punches’ in expressing very incisive analysis on the causes and extent of social decay, warped sense of values and depravity in modern society.
Anyone who sincerely cares about how cheap/worthless human life has become; anyone wondering how and why money, fame and material possessions, acquired by whatever means, are the things now cherished; anyone concerned about and who wants to change the materialistic, selfish, ignorant, egocentric and depraved mindset in present day society should read this book.
It is said that ‘The truth is bitter’, but in this book the truth is sweet.
